Starmer has repeatedly insisted that he would not step down voluntarily and would remain in office if challenged by a rival, the BBC reported on Sunday.
However, developments over the past 48 hours have fueled speculation about his political future. Several government insiders now reportedly believe that Starmer could soon outline plans for his departure, with an announcement potentially coming as early as Monday.
Business Secretary Peter Kyle said Starmer would act in "what is in the best interests of the country" as he assesses the challenges facing his government and the current political realities.
Reports suggest that pressure on the prime minister has intensified amid mounting criticism over his administration's performance.
Trump Says Starmer Will Step Down
Anadolu also reported that U.S. President Donald Trump claimed Starmer would step down, blaming what he described as failures in immigration and energy policy.
“Keir Starmer will resign as Prime Minister of The United Kingdom,” Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on Sunday.
“He failed badly on two very important subjects—IMMIGRATION AND ENERGY (OPEN NORTH SEA OIL!). I wish him well!” Trump added.
Neither Starmer's office nor the British government has publicly confirmed any plans for the prime minister to step down.
The reports come amid growing scrutiny of Starmer's leadership and increasing questions about the direction of his government.
