US Reportedly Warned Iran Two Hours Before Attack on Nuclear Site

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A former US Defense Department adviser claims that Washington warned Tehran two hours before it attacked Iran's nuclear facilities.

"To be clear, the United States warned Iran two hours before it bombed their nuclear facilities that an attack was coming," retired Colonel Douglas Macgregor said on the X platform as reported by Antara.

Meanwhile, intercepted conversations between senior Iranian officials suggest that a recent US military strike on Iran's nuclear program caused less damage than expected, The Washington Post reported on Sunday as reported by Anadolu.

US intelligence data shows Iranian officials privately discussing why the strike ordered by US President Donald Trump was less damaging than anticipated, the newspaper reported, citing four people familiar with the matter.

However, a senior US intelligence official told the newspaper that one piece of signals intelligence "does not reflect the full intelligence picture." The official cautioned that one phone call is not the equivalent of a complete assessment based on multiple sources.

Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, among other top officials, have insisted that the strike “totally destroyed” Iran’s nuclear enrichment site.

Iran’s Foreign Ministry, meanwhile, acknowledged serious damage but said key materials had been removed beforehand, limiting long-term damage.

Trump, however, dismissed claims of any evacuation, saying, “They didn’t move anything. They didn’t think it was going to be possible to do it the way we did it.”

Initial U.S. intelligence assessments, reported by CNN and The New York Times, suggested the strike may have slowed Iran’s program for only a few months — a view the White House has denied.

CIA Director John Ratcliffe said “new intelligence” found the strike caused “severe damage” that would take years to rebuild.

On the evening of June 13, Israel launched a military operation against Iran, accusing Tehran of running a secret military nuclear program.

Airstrikes and infiltrations by sabotage groups have targeted nuclear facilities, top generals and nuclear scientists, and Iranian air bases.

Iran denied the accusations and retaliated against Israel. The two sides attacked each other for 12 days. The US intervened by launching attacks on three Iranian nuclear facilities on the night of June 22, including the underground Fordow nuclear site.

In retaliation, Iran fired missiles at the US-owned Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar on the night of June 23. Iran insisted the attack was not intended to escalate tensions.

US President Donald Trump later said he hoped Iran's attack on the military base was merely "venting" and paved the way for peace in the Middle East.

He also announced that Israel and Iran had agreed to a ceasefire that formally ended the 12-day war.
