TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Venezuelan Interim President Delcy Rodriguez said at least 32 people were killed and 700 others injured in powerful twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela on Wednesday, June 24, 2026, local time, according Anadolu and DW.

This number is the first figure Rodriguez has provided regarding the number of victims of the back-to-back earthquakes.

Seismologists confirmed the first major earthquake, measuring 7.2 magnitude, struck near the city of San Felipe, the capital of Yaracuy state. About 40 seconds later, a second, larger earthquake measuring 7.5 magnitude struck southeast of the city of Yumare.

This earthquake was the largest ever to hit Venezuela and the strongest in 125 years.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the epicenter was 10 kilometers below the surface and west of the coastal region of Morón.

The earthquake was felt strongly in the capital, Caracas, causing the collapse of several buildings.

"Dozens of buildings have collapsed and we are engaged in the arduous task of rescuing the lives that God allows us to save. The state of La Guaira is facing a true tragedy and has become a disaster zone," she said, as quoted from DW.

The USGS estimates the death toll could be in the thousands, with figures ranging from 10,000 to 100,000.

With the primary goal of saving lives, President Rodriguez said local authorities are focused on rescuing victims trapped in the rubble of destroyed buildings and homes, according to a teleSUR report.

According to the latest technical data from the USGS, the twin earthquakes struck northern Venezuela with great force.
