TEMPO.CO, Jakarta The greatness of the international tournament always got viewers wondering which countries hosted the most FIFA World Cup in history. Despite attracting billions of viewers every four years, the FIFA World Cup has been hosted by a surprisingly small number of nations.

Since the tournament’s inaugural edition in 1930, only 19 countries have had the opportunity to stage football’s biggest event, with several returning as hosts multiple times.

Countries that hosted the most FIFA World Cup

Based on the data shared by Top End Sports and Visual Capitalist, Mexico became the first country to host the FIFA World Cup three times, having previously welcomed the event in 1970 and 1986 before hosting again in 2026.

Close behind is a group of nations that have each staged the competition twice, including Germany, France, Italy, Brazil, and the United States.

Here’s a closer look at the countries that hosted the most FIFA World Cup:

Mexico - 3 times (1970, 1986, 2026)

United States - 2 times (1994, 2026)

Germany - 2 times (1974, 2006)

Italy- 2 times (1934, 1990)

Brazil - 2 times (1950, 2014)

France - 2 times (1938, 1998)

As the World Cup has grown into the world's biggest sporting event, the race to host it has become increasingly intense. FIFA assesses bids using a wide range of criteria, including stadium infrastructure, transportation systems, accommodation capacity, security measures, financial commitments, and sustainability plans.

The governing body has also made a concerted effort to broaden the tournament’s global footprint. South Africa made history as the first African nation to host the World Cup in 2010, followed by Russia in 2018 and Qatar in 2022, which became the first Middle Eastern host.

These milestones reflect FIFA’s push to transform the World Cup into a truly worldwide event, extending beyond its traditional strongholds in Europe and South America.

Looking beyond the 2026 tournament, FIFA has already mapped out the next two World Cups. The 2030 edition will be hosted primarily by Spain, Portugal, and Morocco, while special centenary matches will be held in Uruguay, Argentina, and Paraguay to commemorate 100 years since the inaugural World Cup in 1930.
