TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs has commended TikTok for complying with new restrictions on underage users, as part of the government’s broader effort to strengthen online child protection.
Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid said the platform has aligned with Government Regulation No. 17 of 2025, known as PP Tunas, which governs electronic systems in safeguarding children. The regulation forms part of Indonesia’s push to hold digital platforms more accountable for user safety, particularly minors.
Compliance with Age Restrictions
TikTok has formally committed to enforcing a minimum user age of 16, in line with PP Tunas requirements. The company submitted a compliance letter to the government outlining its readiness to implement the regulation.
According to Meutya, the platform has also pledged to regularly report updates on its enforcement efforts, signaling ongoing cooperation with regulators. This includes improvements in age verification systems and stricter monitoring of user activity to prevent underage access.
Enforcement Actions and Account Removal
The ministry noted that TikTok is the first platform to report concrete enforcement actions under the new rules.
As of April 10, 2026, TikTok had deactivated around 780,000 accounts belonging to users under 16 in Indonesia. Based on recent trends, the number is estimated to be approaching one million accounts, reflecting the scale of enforcement required in one of TikTok’s largest markets.
“This is an early win for the public, parents, and children in Indonesia,” Meutya said, adding that consistent enforcement will be key to long-term impact.
Industry-Wide Compliance Push
Beyond TikTok, the ministry has received compliance commitments from several major platforms, including X, Bigo Live, and services under Meta such as Instagram, Facebook, and Threads.
However, the government is still seeking similar commitments from Roblox and YouTube, particularly regarding stricter safeguards and transparency in handling underage users.
Ongoing Government Engagement
The ministry said it will continue engaging with platforms that have yet to comply, both through formal and informal channels, particularly in discussions around platform features and child safety mechanisms.
Meutya emphasized that enforcement of PP Tunas will be conducted gradually but firmly, with the possibility of administrative sanctions for non-compliant platforms.
“We will continue communication to ensure all platforms meet the required standards,” she said, urging industry-wide cooperation to create a safer digital environment for Indonesian children.
