TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - More than 8,000 flights scheduled to take off over the weekend have been cancelled due to a major winter storm hitting the United States. The storm has caused widespread heavy snow and a massive layer of ice stretching from eastern Texas to North Carolina.
According to the flight tracking site FlightAware, as reported by Al Jazeera, at least 3,400 flights were delayed or cancelled on Saturday, January 24, 2026. Over 5,000 flights were cancelled for Sunday.
Around 140 million people from New Mexico to New England are under winter storm warnings, as weather forecasters say the damage, especially in ice-affected areas, could rival that of a hurricane.
Snow fell in parts of Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas on Friday ahead of the winter storm. The storm is expected to meet extremely cold Arctic air and sweep across much of the U.S. during the weekend.
"This is a mean storm," said Jacob Asherman, a meteorologist at the U.S. Weather Prediction Center in Maryland. He said this is the largest storm of the season.
The worst conditions are expected in parts of Louisiana, Mississippi, and Tennessee. Ice up to an inch thick is likely to coat tree branches, power lines, and roadways.
President Donald Trump said via social media on Friday that his administration was coordinating with state and local officials. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) is fully prepared to respond.
This storm marks the first major test for New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, who took office just a few weeks ago. He told local news station NY1 on Friday that the city's sanitation workforce will shift to the largest snow response operation in the country ahead of the heavy snowfall expected on Sunday.
