World's First AI Art Museum Google's Dataland Opens in Los Angeles

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Technology company Google officially opened Dataland, an artificial intelligence (AI) art museum claimed to be the first of its kind in the world on June 20, 2026. The museum, located at The Grand LA in Los Angeles, United States, occupies an area of approximately 2,300 square meters and was developed in collaboration with media artist Refik Anadol, who has been working with Google since 2016.

The opening of Dataland marks Google's latest step in promoting the use of AI in various fields, including art. "Google's position in this debate is now relatively clear, which is not surprising given the company’s multi-billion-dollar investments in the technology," according to a report by Mezha on June 19, 2026.

The inaugural exhibition at the museum is titled "Machine Dreams: Rainforest." The exhibition is powered by an AI system that can generate visual content in real time in up to 1.2 billion pixels. In addition to displaying ever-changing visuals, the exhibition space also features soundscapes, sensors that analyze visitor emotions, and algorithmically generated scents to create a multi-sensory experience.

Google states that Dataland operates using the Gemini model on top of the Google Cloud infrastructure. Thus, all exhibition content is processed in the company's artificial intelligence data center before being broadcast directly to the museum.

Alongside the museum's opening, Google Arts & Culture has also launched the AI Artist Residency program. The program offers a $25,000 grant, mentorship from Refik Anadol Studio, and access to various Google machine learning tools for artists. Participants' works will be exhibited at Dataland and the Google Arts & Culture site for one year.
