TEMPO.COJakarta - The Yogyakarta Regional Culture Office (DIY) in Indonesia has confirmed that it will organize hundreds of traditional events throughout 2026, despite budget constraints.

The head of DIY's Culture Office, Dian Lakshmi Pratiwi, stated that the holding of these events is an effort to strengthen, preserve, and maintain the local traditions that are the strength of Yogyakarta. These events also drive the economy, as seen this year. "Throughout 2025, out of 283 traditional events successfully held, more than 10,000 cultural and artistic activists were involved, and it stimulated 872 local MSMEs," said Dian during the cultural calendar launch for 2026 in Yogyakarta on Wednesday night, December 10, 2025.

Dian pointed out that a single event can significantly impact the local economy through the influx of tourists. She cited the Pasar Kangen event, which generated up to Rp5.4 billion in revenue within a week. "Pasar Kangen is one of the events that demonstrates that cultural spaces can also be spaces for prosperity," she said.

Therefore, she ensured that traditional events that have been successfully held in previous years will continue to take place next year, although the number may not be exactly the same as in 2025, with a quota of over 200 events. "Featured traditional events in each district will still be held," said Dian.

She cited events handled by DIY's Culture Office, such as Labuhan Gunung Merapi in Sleman Regency and Labuhan Pantai Parangkusumo in Bantul Regency, scheduled for January 18 to 19, 2026.

Additionally, there will be Grebeg Syawal on March 20-21, Grebeg Besar on May 27 to 28, Grebeg Maulud on August 25 to 26, Mubeng Beteng 1 Suro on June 17 to 18, Pasar Kangen on June 22, Yogyakarta Cultural Festival in July, and Pasar Lawas Kotagede in September.

Events in Regencies and Cities

Meanwhile, events at the district and city levels will maintain their iconic presence. In Yogyakarta City, for example, the Kotabaru Heritage Festival in June and the Yogyakarta Literary Festival in August will continue.

Dian revealed that the 2026 cultural calendar carries the theme Ngupadi Swadaya. "This theme is a collective statement about how the culture of Yogyakarta wants to move forward independently, sustainably, and based on its own strength," she said.

Ngupadi Swadaya, she explained, means seeking, forging, and cultivating independence. It is not about waiting, not about relying, but about making efforts together.
