TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - YouTube will reportedly enforce a new age restriction for its livestreaming feature beginning on July 22, 2025. The updated policy rules that users must be at least 16 years old to be able to broadcast live on the platform, raising it from the previous 13 years old requirement.
Nevertheless, users aged 13 to 15 are still allowed to appear in live broadcasts, as long as they are accompanied by an adult. This rule had previously applied to children under 13 years old.
YouTube provides a grace period related to this policy. "After July 22, live streaming featuring children aged 13-15 without the accompaniment of an adult will not be able to use the live chat feature, both in their broadcasts and on related accounts," wrote a report by 9to5Google, June 26, 2025.
Nevertheless, YouTube will not immediately impose heavy sanctions. Removal of broadcasts or temporary suspension of live streaming access for accounts that violate the rules is said to be applied in the future.
As part of this update, YouTube has also released best practice guidelines for live broadcasts with underage children, especially aimed at users aged 16 and 17 who are still allowed to stream.
The guidelines include maintaining privacy, using security settings, informing adults before broadcasting, moderating the chat column, and maintaining a "positive and fun" atmosphere.
This step is part of YouTube's efforts to improve safety for teenage users on its platform. YouTube also continues to provide features like the Family Center to help parents monitor their children's activities on the site.
