TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The film Superman (2025), directed by James Gunn, marks a new chapter for the DC Universe and began screening on July 9, 2025. Alongside its more human portrayal of Superman, the film brings Metropolis to life using real-world locations across the United States. Some scenes were also filmed in other countries, including Svalbard in Norway.
The movie explores the inner struggles of Clark Kent, who must navigate life as both a journalist from Smallville and an alien from Krypton. He faces mounting pressure from society and the government, who begin to view him as a threat.
This DC Studios production stars David Corenswet as Superman, with Rachel Brosnahan portraying reporter Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult taking on the role of Lex Luthor.
Filming Locations of Superman (2025)
To ground its larger-than-life story, Superman (2025) used a mix of iconic and dramatic real-world locations. These are the places that helped shape the film’s visual identity:
1. Cleveland
According to Travel and Leisure Asia, much of the film was shot in Ohio, the birthplace of Superman’s creators, Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster, as a tribute to their legacy. Cleveland served as the main backdrop for the fictional city of Metropolis.
Several scenes were filmed in the city, including exterior shots of the Daily Planet headquarters, which used the historic Leader Building constructed in 1913
The Cleveland Arcade was chosen as the setting for the iconic aerial kiss between Superman and Lois Lane, as reported by Super Hero Hype.
Other Cleveland locations featured in the movie include City Hall, which became Metropolis City Hall, Progressive Field Stadium for action scenes, and the Detroit–Superior Bridge, which appeared in the film’s trailer.
Beyond the filming sites, Cleveland also offers attractions such as the Cleveland Museum of Art, MOCA Cleveland, Severance Hall & The Cleveland Orchestra, the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo, Cleveland Aquarium, and scenic spots like the Cleveland Botanical Garden, North Coast Harbor, and Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
2. Cincinnati
Filming also took place in Cincinnati, where Union Terminal was transformed into the Hall of Justice, the Justice League's headquarters. The flag of Metropolis was seen flying in front of the Cincinnati Museum Center, indicating additional scenes were shot at the location.
3. Mentor
Headlands Beach State Park in Mentor, still within Ohio, was turned into a military base complete with army tents. The city is also home to several notable landmarks such as the James A. Garfield National Historic Site, the Wildwood Cultural Center, Eleanor B. Garfield Park & Nature Center, and Mentor Marsh State Nature Preserve.
4. Svalbard
Some of the film’s key scenes, particularly those set in the Fortress of Solitude, were filmed in Svalbard, Norway. Known as one of the northernmost inhabited places on Earth, the region adds dramatic icy landscapes to the film.
Visitors to Svalbard can explore the Svalbard Museum, join North Pole expeditions, or chase the northern lights between November and February.
