45 Cases of Food Poisoning Recorded in Indonesia's Free Nutritious Meal Program

TEMPO.COJakarta - The National Nutrition Body (BGN) has recorded 45 cases of food poisoning since the free nutritious meal program began in January 2025. These incidents have affected 4,711 beneficiaries, who experienced a range of poisoning symptoms.

According to BGN head Dadan Hindayana, the data was collected directly from the field by the Deputy of Monitoring and Supervision. He noted that cases of food poisoning typically occur in newly established Nutrition Fulfillment Service Units (SPPG). "New STTP still need time to develop their own habits and mitigation strategies," Dadan said from his Jakarta office on Monday, September 22, 2025.

Dadan explained that the cases have been categorized into three regions:

  • Region 1: Western Indonesia with 7 cases

  • Region 2: The island of Java with 27 cases

  • Region 3: Eastern Indonesia and surrounding areas with 11 cases

Acknowledging that the multi-trillion rupiah program has many shortcomings, Dadan stated that the institution is committed to making improvements and continuously adding kitchen facilities to meet its targets.

He also claimed that the 4,711 tainted servings represent a small fraction of the total 1 billion portions that have been cooked over the nine-month period of President Prabowo Subianto's flagship program. "Praise be to God, most of the children are indeed happy with the nutritious meal program," he added.
