TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Chair of Iran's Parliament, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, in his speech in the parliament on Sunday, warned the United States not to make a miscalculation. He cautioned that if the U.S. dares to attack Iran, the country will retaliate.
"Let us be clear: in the case of an attack on Iran, the occupied territories [Israel] as well as all US bases and ships will be our legitimate target," said Qalibaf, a former commander in the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as reported by ABC News.
According to activists, at least 116 people have died as a result of the nationwide protests against the Iranian theocracy that have been ongoing for more than two weeks. As the death toll rises, 2,600 others have been detained, according to the U.S.-based Human Rights Activist News Agency.
U.S. President Donald Trump has warned Iranian leaders not to use violence against protesters. The U.S. has stated its readiness to support Iranian demonstrators. Trump is said to have been briefed on various options for attacking Iran amid the wave of protests in the country.
Citing several senior U.S. officials, The New York Times reported, through Antara, that Trump is seriously considering the option of an attack but has not yet made a final decision. According to a report by RIA Novosti from Moscow, the U.S. newspaper mentioned that the options presented to Trump include an attack on non-military targets in the Iranian capital, Tehran.
Some options involve targeting Iranian security forces handling the protests. However, U.S. authorities are also aware that this action could backfire and trigger retaliatory actions against U.S. military personnel and diplomats in the Middle East.
A senior U.S. military official told the NYT that if an attack on Iran is approved, commanders in the region will need time to prepare for a possible retaliatory strike.
Commenting on the NYT report, the White House referred to Trump's earlier warning to the Iranian authorities about the consequences if any protesters were killed.
On Saturday, he stated the U.S. readiness to "support" Iran. On the same day, Reza Pahlavi, the son of the Shah of Iran who was overthrown in 1979, posted a video on platform X calling for a massive strike in Iran.
