528 International Flights Canceled by Anak Krakatau Ashfall

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Directorate General of Immigration recorded that 528 international flights were impacted by airport closures resulting from Mount Anak Krakatau's volcanic ash plume between September 5 and 7, 2026. The figure comprises 254 canceled arrival flights and 266 canceled departures.

"This condition has affected 86,760 passengers," said Director General of Immigration Hendarsam Marantoko at Terminal 3 of Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Monday, September 7, 2026.

Hendarsam stated that foreign nationals affected by flight cancellations or diversions are eligible for Emergency Stay Permits (ITKT). According to him, the service reflects immigration authorities' readiness to assist travelers impacted by natural disasters.

He underscored the need to maintain legal compliance regarding foreign visitors while applying a humanitarian approach during disaster emergencies.

"We understand the hardship and inconvenience experienced by passengers as a result of these flight disruptions," he said.

He assured that ITKT processing is fast, efficient, and free from overstay fines, granting foreign nationals peace of mind until their departure, as immigration enforces a zero-rupiah tariff for overstays caused by force majeure.

Hendarsam added that the policy extends beyond the Mount Anak Krakatau eruption. Similar measures can be enacted during other force majeure events. As of September 7, the Soekarno-Hatta Class I Special Immigration Office has processed 26 ITKT applications for affected foreign nationals.

To ensure seamless service, the Soekarno-Hatta Immigration Office added a second stay permit counter, doubling its operational capacity for ITKT requests. Besides Soekarno-Hatta, several other offices have issued ITKTs, including Central Jakarta (5 requests), North Jakarta (4 requests), Depok and South Jakarta (2 requests each), alongside single requests at the Ngurah Rai, Juanda, Bekasi, and Tangerang offices.

Under the service provisions for affected travelers, the immigration office overseeing the departure checkpoint will issue ITKTs valid for up to 30 days, extendable in accordance with existing regulations. The zero-rupiah tariff provision applies to foreign nationals facing overstays specifically due to flight cancellations or delays.

To qualify, foreign nationals or airline representatives need only submit an official declaration from civil aviation, airline, or airport authorities, alongside travel documents and existing visas or stay permits.

The Director General of Immigration guaranteed that all processing continues to prioritize due diligence and standard operating procedures to uphold immigration order and security. Immigration authorities continue to balance enforcement and oversight duties with public service for foreign visitors.

"In emergencies like this, public service becomes our priority, particularly in assisting foreign nationals experiencing travel disruptions so they receive regulatory certainty and ease," Hendarsam said.
