Anies Baswedan Addresses Issue of Term Changes in Indonesia's Democratic Practices

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Former Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan addressed the issue of term changes in democratic practices in Indonesia. The former presidential candidate in the 2024 General Elections reminded that democracy is a mechanism used to rectify mistakes in leadership.

"This is why democracy is important. It provides an interval. If a decision-making error occurs, then the error is rectified within the interval," said Anies during a meeting of the People's Movement organization in Central Jakarta, on Sunday, July 13, 2025.

Anies views democracy as a crucial pillar to ensure that a faulty policy can be evaluated and replaced. Without democracy, Anies said, a misguided policy could detrimentally affect the people in the long run. "There is a term of leadership. After that, it ends. Without democracy, there is no term of leadership."

Currently, Anies perceives a backward trend in democratic practices in several countries. The former Minister of Education and Culture does not want Indonesia to follow that path. "We must jointly protect (democracy). And democracy is critical to ensure that the nation's plans are in line with the people's aspirations."

He continued, stating that the consequence of safeguarding democracy is welcoming future changes. For Anies, change is the gateway to improvement.

Anies analyzed that Indonesia has relatively more stable geopolitical conditions compared to the conflict-prone regions of East and South Asia. This, according to Anies, positions Indonesia as a guardian of peace in the Asian region.

However, in order to fulfill that role, Anies Baswedan stated that Indonesia needs to address its internal issues first. For instance, when Indonesia urges the enforcement of democracy and human rights internationally, Indonesia must have resolved these two issues domestically. "We must resolve domestic issues as well," he said.
