TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Good news for fans of The Princess Diaries. The third film is moving into development and is ready for the big screen. Lead actress Anne Hathaway confirmed the project is in the works.
"One hundred percent, we’re constantly working on it," Hathaway said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly.
While this news sounds promising, the process hasn't been entirely smooth sailing. Anne revealed that the filming schedule for The Devil Wears Prada 2, directed by David Frankel, is quite demanding throughout the summer of 2025. This makes it difficult to focus on two major projects at once.
Not Officially Approved Yet, But Still Moving Forward
Interestingly, despite being in development, The Princess Diaries 3 hasn't yet been fully greenlit. Nevertheless, Anne remains optimistic. She is firmly committed to continuing the film, and the team is gradually developing the script.
According to her, the high expectations from fans present a challenge. "if you’re going to do it, you have to knock it out of the park," she said.
The Iconic Role of Mia Thermopolis
Anne first played Mia Thermopolis in Garry Marshall's The Princess Diaries (2001). The film was adapted from the novel by Meg Cabot and became an instant hit.
The story follows Mia, an ordinary high school student whose life changes drastically after learning she is the heir to the throne of Genovia. Her grandmother is played by Julie Andrews.
A Huge Box Office Success
Not only iconic, The Princess Diaries was also a huge commercial success. Produced by Whitney Houston, the first film grossed approximately US$165 million (approximately Rp2.8 trillion). The sequel was equally successful and even served as the big-screen debut for Chris Pine as Nicholaus Devereaux.
