Apple's Latest News: Foldable iPhone Enters Prototype Testing Phase

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Apple is reportedly starting the prototype testing for the foldable iPhone and targeting the completion of the first phase, known as P1, by the end of 2025. Quoting information from Macrumors on July 2nd, the device will go through the Engineering Verification Test (EVT) phase, following P2 and P3, before finally being launched in 2026.

Each prototype testing phase takes about two months. During the testing period, Apple's supply chain partners will conduct limited trials.

"Before handing over the assembly responsibility to the main iPhone assemblers, Foxconn and Pegatron, who will validate the results and production capabilities," as stated in the Macrumors review.

The development of the foldable iPhone queues behind the iPhone 17, which will complete the EVT phase in the second quarter of 2025. Apple also temporarily halted the development of the foldable iPad, which was supposed to be launched alongside the foldable iPhone.

In the Macrumors review, the company's reasons seem to include production difficulties and increased production costs related to flexible screen technology. There is also the factor of low consumer demand for devices with large foldable screens.

Specifications for this first foldable iPhone have also been leaked on several sites. Quoting GSM Arena, the phone's screen will be layered with OLED panels with a 120Hz HDR+ refresh rate. Its operating system will be iOS 26, powered by the A19 Pro chipset. The embedded RAM will be 12 GB with internal storage variants of 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB.

Its rear camera will have three lenses with resolutions of 48 MP, 48 MP, and 12 MP. Its video recording capability ranges from 1080p with 25-240 frames per second (fps) to 4K quality at 24-120 fps. Meanwhile, its front camera will be 4 MP, supporting video recording of 1080p at 25-120 fps.

Its speakers will already have stereo sound. Apple also includes a side fingerprint sensor, USB type C, and other accessories. There have been no leaks regarding the phone's size, color variants, price, and other embedded features.
