TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) recorded an increase in the number of casualties in the Sumatra disaster on Monday, December 8, 2025. The Head of Basarnas, Air Marshal TNI Mohammad Syafii, reported the development of the casualty figures at a working meeting with Commission V of the House of Representatives (DPR).

Syafii stated that the number of casualties due to the disaster across Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra had reached 974 people. "Update at 8.00 this morning, the number of declared casualties has reached a total of 974 people," said Syafii at the DPR complex, Jakarta, on Monday, December 8, 2025.

The number of victims still missing stands at 298 people. Furthermore, the number of victims evacuated, according to Basarnas, totals 10,957 people, while the number of survivors is 9,983 people.

Data Discrepancy Between Basarnas and BNPB

Syafii noted that the casualty data reported by Basarnas currently differs from the data held by the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB). However, he remains optimistic that the data on disaster victims will eventually arrive at the same final accumulation.

"For the current number of deaths at 974 people, there is still a discrepancy with the data released by BNPB. However, we are confident that this data will eventually be the same," he stated.

According to Syafii, the BNPB collects data on casualties from various governmental sources. Meanwhile, Basarnas compiles data solely from the reports of the Search and Rescue (SAR) Mission Coordinators stationed across Aceh, Medan, Nias, and Padang.

BNPB's Latest Figures

Based on the emergency flood and landslide handling data geoportal of Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra displayed by BNPB, the number of fatalities reached 961 people on Monday afternoon. The number of deaths in Aceh reached 389. Then, West Sumatra reported 234 people, and North Sumatra recorded 338 fatalities.

The total number of missing persons across the three provinces is 234 people. The highest count of missing persons occurred in West Sumatra with 95 people. Meanwhile, in Aceh, the number of missing persons reached 62 people, and 77 people are missing in North Sumatra. The total number of injured persons in the three provinces reached 5,000 people.

Rising Toll and Dynamic Data

The total number of deaths has been increasing continuously. The BNPB website recorded 940 fatalities the day before (Sunday). This continuous rise was highlighted by the Head of the Data, Information, and Communication Center for Disaster Management of BNPB, Abdul Muhari.

"Innalillahi wa inailihi roji'un, certainly our deepest sympathy goes to the victims. Today, Saturday, December 6, 2025, the total number of deaths is 914 people," said Abdul Muhari in a press conference broadcast on the BNPB Indonesia YouTube channel on Saturday.

Abdul Muhari commented that the number of casualties is dynamic. This occurs because some victims previously reported missing are subsequently reported to be in a safe condition in various locations. "Of course, we hope that this number continues to decrease, so that search and rescue operations can truly minimize the number of missing persons," he concluded.
