BMKG: Cloudy Skies to Blanket Indonesia Today

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) forecasts cloudy weather across the majority of Indonesian regions on Thursday, August 20, 2026.

In western Indonesia, partly cloudy to cloudy skies are expected to loom over Banda Aceh, Medan, Tanjung Pinang, Jambi, Pangkalpinang, Jakarta, Semarang, Yogyakarta, Surabaya, Pontianak, and Samarinda.

In Jakarta in particular, cloudy weather will greet the capital the whole day, except for Central Jakarta, South Jakarta, and East Jakarta, which will see partly cloudy skies in the afternoon.

The air temperature in Jakarta ranges from 24 to 32 degrees Celsius, with wind speeds between 1 and 25 kilometers per hour.

"Meanwhile, light rain is likely to fall in Bengkulu, Serang, Bandung, and Tanjung Selor," said BMKG forecaster Nazmi Nariyah in a broadcast followed from Jakarta on Thursday.

BMKG predicts hazy air will blanket Padang, Palembang, Bandar Lampung, Palangkaraya, and Banjarmasin. Pekanbaru is also likely to experience smoke or haze.

In eastern Indonesia, most major cities are also forecast to experience partly cloudy to cloudy conditions, including Denpasar, Mataram, Kupang, Makassar, Gorontalo, Manado, Ternate, Ambon, Sorong, Manokwari, Nabire, Jayapura, and Merauke.

Light rain is forecast for Mamuju, Palu, and Jayawijaya, while Kendari has the potential for hazy air.

Nevertheless, the weather agency continues to warn the public of the potential for moderate to heavy rain in several areas, related to tropical cyclone 95W off the east coast of Hainan Island, China.

The system, with a pressure of around 999 hectopascals and maximum wind speeds of 25 knots, is moving northwest and has a low probability of developing into a tropical cyclone in the next 48 to 72 hours.

The cyclone is triggering convergence and confluence zones that can increase the growth of rain clouds, especially around the system and along the convergence zone.

BMKG also urges the public to continue updating weather information through its official channels, including the bmkg.go.id website and BMKG's official social media accounts.
