TikTok Explores Money Transfer via DMs: What to Know

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - TikTok is reportedly developing a feature that will allow users on the platform to send money via Direct Message (DM), according to Antara.

This news was first reported by Bloomberg, which also revealed that if the feature's development is successful, TikTok will facilitate the transaction process using its TikTok Pay digital wallet.

Citing TechCrunch, Tuesday, August 18, local time, the development of this feature was discovered in hidden code within the TikTok app for iPhones in the US.

The code indicates that recipients can "tap to accept" payments, and senders can also include a message with their payments.

When contacted, TikTok stated that the feature has not been tested, signaling that the service is still in its early development stages.

Because the feature is still in development, it is not yet known when or if TikTok plans to release it to the wider public.

This is not TikTok's first foray into financial services.

In early 2026, TikTok applied to Brazil's central bank for approval to operate as a tech company offering lending and payment services.

While the platform's image is primarily a social network, TikTok has actually expanded beyond that.

They've added more advanced search features, a TikTok Shop shopping service, games, hotel bookings, and much more.

By testing a service that allows users to make transactions within TikTok in the US market, TikTok will eventually compete with Venmo and Zelle.

However, TikTok isn't the only social network to venture into financial services, as X previously launched a similar service called X Money, which allows users to send money to each other.
