TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) detected the occurrence of an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.1 in the area of Melonguane, North Talaud Islands, North Sulawesi, on Saturday, January 10, 2026 evening.
According to information from the BMKG's website, the earthquake's epicenter was at a depth of 17 kilometers and 52 kilometers southeast of Melonguane.
BMKG stated that this data is preliminary information. "This information prioritizes speed, so the data processing results are not yet stable and may change," the BMKG wrote as reported by Antara.
The earthquake tremors were felt on the MMI scale III-IV in Tobelo, Sitaro Islands, and Ternate. Meanwhile, the areas of North Minahasa, Bitung, up to Morotai felt the earthquake at a scale of II-III MMI.
The BMKG declared that this earthquake does not have the potential to cause a tsunami, but the public is advised to remain vigilant against the possibility of aftershocks.
