TEMPO.CO, JakartaThe Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) is gearing up to conduct weather modification in the Indonesian region of Jambi, in anticipation of dry hydrometeorological disasters such as wildfires.

The Head of the Sultan Thaha Jambi Class I Meteorology Station, Ibnu Sulistyono, in Jambi, Monday, April 28, 2025, said that the weather modifications are scheduled for May, September, or October this year.

Less rainfall is expected in May and June, Sulistyono said, adding that the lowest volume of rainfall is expected to occur between June, July, and August.

"Weather modification operations must be carried out during low-volume rainfall, to reduce the risk of dry hydrometeorological disasters in the Jambi Province," said Sulistyono, as quoted by Antara.

This weather modification operation, according to Sulistyono, aims to induce rainfall to increase the water level before the beginning of the dry season. The operation will mitigate the impact of disasters brought forth by drought.

BMKG will work with the National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB), the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), and private parties, to run the weather modification operations.
