Easier Schengen Visa for Indonesian Citizens After IEU CEPA Agreement

2 days ago 8

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian citizens (WNI) visiting the European Union countries for the second time or more will find it easier to obtain a multi-entry Schengen visa after the Indonesia-European Union Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (IEU CEPA) was agreed upon.

The announcement was made by the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen when she received Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto in Brussels, Belgium, on Sunday, July 13, 2025.

Ursula stated that the interconnectivity between European Union's and Indonesia's societies is crucial in enhancing their cooperation. Thus, the communities should be the first to benefit from the close relationship between the European Union and Indonesia.

"Therefore, I am pleased to announce that the European Commission has adopted a decision regarding the visa cascade system. This means, from now on, Indonesian citizens visiting the European Union for the second time will be eligible for a Schengen multi-entry visa," said Ursula in a joint statement quoted from her official statement.

According to Ursula, visa leniency for Indonesian nationals will not only facilitate visits to Europe but also encourage investment, overseas studies, and inter-societal connections.

"In short, we are building a bridge between our societies," she said.

Indonesia and the European Union are increasingly close to agreeing on the IEU CEPA agreement after the meeting between Prabowo and Ursula von der Leyen in Brussels.

Ursula stated that the IEU CEPA will open up significant economic opportunities in various sectors while strengthening the supply chain of crucial raw materials for energy and digital transition. In addition to human relations, this agreement will open up new markets for both parties and create economic opportunities in agriculture, services, and automotive sectors.

"And more importantly, we not only want a secure supply, but also a responsible one. This means: respecting the environment, respecting local communities, and a strong focus on creating decent jobs and local added value," said Ursula.

Prabowo described this agreement as a significant milestone in the economic relationship between Indonesia and the European Union. Through this agreement, Prabowo stated that both parties have successfully aligned their respective economic interests.

"We have made significant progress and agreed to accommodate each other's economic interests. We found that these interests complement and benefit each other," said Prabowo.
