TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Elon Musk stated that he has 'formed' his new political party named America Party. As reported by TIME and CBS News on Sunday, the former head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) has pledged to do so if President Donald Trump's 'Big and Beautiful' bill on national spending and taxes is passed.
Musk has been-and continues to be-a vocal critic of the policy bill. He stated that the rule would 'cause a very large strategic loss' for America as the projected trillions of dollars would add to the country's debt.
'With a factor of two to one, you want a new political party and you will get it! When it comes to our country's bankruptcy with wastefulness and corruption, we live in a one-party system, not a democracy,' Musk said through his social media platform, X, on Saturday, a day after Trump signed the bill.
'Today, the America Party is formed to restore your freedom.'
The Tesla CEO opened a poll on July 4th coinciding with US Independence Day. He asked his more than 220 million followers if he should create a new political party. More than 65% of the over 1.2 million respondents chose 'yes.'
Musk first proposed the formation of a third party, dubbed 'America Party,' earlier this month, as part of the fierce dispute between the president and the Tesla CEO marking the possible end of their political alliance.
The billionaire reiterated the idea of a third party last week as lawmakers raced to send the One Big Beautiful Bill Act to Trump's desk-stating that he would launch the party if the US Congress passes what he described as 'crazy spending bills.'
Musk went on to share his potential strategy to 'gain independence from the two-party system,' stating that he might try to 'focus on just two or three Senate seats and eight to 10 House districts' for his party.
'Given the very narrow legislative margin, it will be enough to be the decisive voice on controversial laws, ensuring that the laws serve the actual desires of the people,' Musk further explained.
However, what Musk actually plans with his rival third party is still open for discussion. Musk has not shared specific policy proposals or explicitly stated the core principles of his party.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, Trump said that he 'sad to see Elon Musk go completely off the rails.'
Commenting on Musk's announcement, he said, 'He even wants to start a third political party, even though the fact is they have never succeeded in the United States. This system seems not designed for them. One thing that can be done by a third party is to create total chaos and total confusion.'
Since Elon Musk decided to launch a new political party, he has to contend with the complexity of state laws, time-consuming voting access rules, and intense litigation.
"It's only the richest man in the world who can make a serious effort to create a new American political party," said Brett Kappel, a veteran election lawyer, to CBS News last week.
