FIFA Warns Erick Thohir for Holding Multiple Positions in PSSI

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Chairperson of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) Erick Thohir is urged to terminate his position as the head of the PSSI Referee Committee. He received a warning from FIFA that does not allow the chairperson to hold multiple positions such as head of the referee committee.

According to Erick, holding multiple positions is a decision to directly oversee referee reform in Indonesia. "Why am I the head of the referee committee? Who dares to bribe me? But even so, next year it will not be allowed because of the warning from the International Football Federation (FIFA/Federation Internationale de Football Association)," said Erick at the Supersoccer Arena, Kudus, on Saturday, July 12, 2025.

He revealed that Yoshimi Ogawa will be the replacement on the referee committee. PSSI has appointed a representative from the Japan Football Association (JFA) as the new Chairman of the PSSI Referee Committee.

Ogawa's presence is also part of the collaboration between PSSI and JFA in an effort to improve the quality and integrity of national referees because of their technical cooperation with PSSI since 2023. "Yoshimi Ogawa's first year as a referee committee in Indonesia will definitely be stressful, because he does not fully understand our football landscape," said Erick, who ensures that Ogawa will remain under his guidance for a smooth transition.

He invited all media outlets that care about the world of football to actively participate in the development of national football. Not only to criticize shortcomings, but also to support the positive steps being taken. "I hope media outlets that love football become part of the development. If there are shortcomings, feel free to criticize. But if there is something good being built, don't turn a blind eye," said Erick.

According to Erick, disproportionate reporting risks extinguishing the spirit of young people who are building their dreams in the world of football. "Young people with dreams could be disappointed to see football being associated with trouble or corruption. Whereas now we are arranging, we are fixing," he said.

Referee reform is one of the top priorities of the PSSI under Erick Thohir's leadership. PSSI is committed to improving the referee supervision and mentoring system in a professional and transparent manner, in order to continuously enhance public confidence in national football.
