Fire Rages in Indonesia's Way Kambas National Park Since Friday

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - A forest fire has been burning in Way Kambas National Park in East Lampung, Indonesia, since Friday afternoon, August 21, with a joint team continuing efforts to contain the blaze.

Way Kambas National Park head MHD Zaidi said Saturday that park officials were working with the Indonesian military (TNI), police and volunteers to extinguish the fire.

“It's true that a fire broke out yesterday afternoon. A joint team from the park, assisted by the TNI, police and volunteers, is still working to extinguish it,” Zaidi said.

Authorities are still assessing the affected area to determine the extent and exact locations of the fire.

Zaidi said firefighting efforts have been hampered by several challenges, including difficult access for vehicles to reach the affected areas.

“The assessment is still underway. There are indeed several challenges, including access that is difficult for vehicles to pass,” he said.

Videos circulating on social media showed flames consuming vegetation inside the park, where dry conditions have worsened during the ongoing dry season.

The Way Kambas National Park authority is prioritizing firefighting efforts and containment to prevent the blaze from spreading to other areas.

A fire also struck the park in January 2026, when more than 2,600 hectares of land were reportedly burned.

As the dry season continues, authorities are warning of an increased risk of forest and land fires in the conservation area, as dry vegetation can accelerate the spread of flames.

Teams remain on the ground to contain the fire while conducting a more detailed assessment of the damage.
