France's Macron to Show Renewed Push for Palestinian Independence in New York Summit

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - French President Emmanuel Macron said he's looking to push for Palestinian independence during the high-level conference in New York, United States, in the upcoming June.

During the summit, Macron stated that France and Saudi Arabia will provide a renewed push for a mutual recognition of both Palestine as well as Israel and its "right to live in peace and security" in the Middle East.

"We are also committed to restarting the two-state solution process, mutual recognition, and lasting peace," said Macron in a joint statement with President Prabowo Subianto at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.

Macron mentioned that this step aligns with Indonesia's stance that the only path to peace is a long-term political solution.

Prabowo backs the push for a two-state solution to achieve peace in the Middle East.

"In various places and forums, I have reiterated Indonesia's stance on the two-state solution, the independence of the Palestinian people, as the only way to achieve true peace," said Prabowo.

Prabowo emphasized that the Indonesian government will recognize Israel once the state of Palestine is recognized. Prabowo stated that the only path to Palestinian independence is through the two-state solution.

"Indonesia has stated that once Israel recognizes Palestine, Indonesia is ready to recognize Israel and open the diplomatic relationship," said Prabowo.

Prabowo also mentioned that Indonesia will guarantee Israel's standing as a sovereign state and ensure its security. In fact, according to Prabowo, Indonesia is ready to send peacekeeping forces to the Palestine-Israel border.

The UN has scheduled a high-level conference on the two-state solution to be held on June 17-20, 2025, in New York.

Citing UN News, the conference will be chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, underscoring the importance of concrete peace between Palestine and Israel.

“We must urgently move from words to deeds. We must move from ending the war in Gaza to ending the conflict itself,” said Anne-Claire Legendre, Middle East and North Africa advisor to French President Emmanuel Macron.

“Faced with the facts on the ground, the prospects of a Palestinian State must be maintained. Irreversible steps and concrete measures for the implementation thereof are necessary.”
