TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) said an earthquake with a magnitude of 5.1 hit the West Coast of Simeulue, Aceh, at 08:20 a.m. Western Indonesia Time (WIB) today, Tuesday, September 23, 2025. According to the director of the Earthquake and Tsunami Center at BMKG, Daryono, the shallow tremor had a thrust fault mechanism.
"The quake was caused by the subduction activity of tectonic plates," he said in a written statement on Tuesday, September 23, 2025.
Daryono explained that the epicenter of the M5.1 earthquake was located at sea, 131 kilometers west of Laut Sinabang, with a 17-kilometer depth. It struck at 2.81 degrees North Latitude and 95.23 degrees East Longitude.
Referring to BMKG's tremor map, residents in the Alapan, Simeulue, and Salang areas experienced the quake at an intensity scale of III-IV Modified Mercalli Intensity (MMI). Meaning, the tremor was felt by many people indoors, but no damage has been reported caused by the earthquake thus far.
"The modeling results indicate no tsunami threats," said Daryono.
As of 08:40 a.m. WIB today, BMKG has yet to detect any aftershocks, but residents are advised to remain calm and not be influenced by unverifiable rumors. "Before returning indoors, ensure safety and avoid risks," said Daryono.
