TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - France fielded captain Kylian Mbappé as a starter, while England benched Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane in the 2026 World Cup third-place playoff at Miami Stadium, United States, on Sunday, July 19, 2026.
For Mbappé, this match presented an opportunity to add to his goal tally in his pursuit of the 2026 World Cup Golden Boot and surpass Lionel Messi as the World Cup's all-time leading scorer.
This match was also Didier Deschamps' final match as France coach. The 57-year-old made major changes after Les Bleus lost 0-2 to Spain in the semifinals.
Deschamps overhauled almost the entire defense. Mike Maignan remained in goal, but the back four in front of him now consisted of Malo Gusto, Ibrahima Konate, Maxence Lacroix, and Theo Hernandez.
In midfield, Warren Zaire-Emery, Rayan Cherki, and Adrien Rabiot were the mainstays, while Michael Olise and Desire Doue supported Mbappé up front.
For England, coach Thomas Tuchel also fielded a different lineup compared to the semifinal against Argentina. Dean Henderson was trusted in goal, with Jarell Quansah, Ezri Konsa, Marc Guehi, and Djed Spence filling the backline.
England's midfield now consisted of Eberechi Eze, Morgan Rogers, and Declan Rice, who wore the captain's armband. Kobbie Mainoo missed his first appearance in this World Cup due to injury.
Bukayo Saka, Ivan Toney, and Marcus Rashford formed the front three. Meanwhile, Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham started the match on the bench.
For the Three Lions, a victory would be their best World Cup achievement since winning the 1966 edition.
