TEMPO.CO, Yogyakarta - A Public Fuel Filling Station (SPBU) in Gedongtengen, Yogyakarta, caught fire with an explosion on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, around 1:11 PM WIB. The incident resulted in several injuries.
Taufiq Kurniawan, Area Manager of Communications, Relations, & CSR for PT Pertamina Patra Niaga in the Central Java region, stated that the fire began with a spark. "At that time, maintenance of the Pertalite dispenser was being carried out by technicians. The dispenser was in a non-operational status," Taufiq said on Tuesday.
During the maintenance process, a spark suddenly appeared at the pump, and the initially small fire quickly grew larger.
The operator of the gas station number 44.552.14 immediately contacted the Yogyakarta Fire Department while attempting to extinguish the flames with the provided fire extinguisher. When the fire department's vehicle arrived, the fire was finally put out at 1:24 PM WIB. "After inspection, the fuel in the gas station's storage tank is in a safe condition and did not catch fire," Taufiq stated.
According to Pertamina's records, two individuals were injured: Kelik (technician) and Gilang Purnomo (gas station supervisor). Both were immediately taken to PKU Hospital in Yogyakarta.
"The gas station is currently non-operational. Pertamina immediately requested the gas station to undergo cleaning, facility maintenance, and physical inspection before it can resume operations," Taufiq added.
Yogyakarta Resort Police spokesperson First Inspector Gandung stated that the fire and explosion at the Gedongtengen gas station resulted in a partial burnout of the gas station area.
"The explosion is suspected to have originated from the gas station's fuel storage tank," Gandung said on Tuesday.
According to the police's chronology, the explosion occurred shortly after a fuel tanker truck left the gas station around 1:15 PM WIB. Prior to this, the fuel tanker truck had filled the gas station's storage tank from 12:45 PM WIB to 1:00 PM WIB.
"The explosion resulted in five people suffering injuries," Gandung confirmed.
Those injured were Ardian Wahyu Atmaja, the gas station security guard, who got minor scrapes on both arms. Sujani, a fuel buyer, felt sick and was in shock because of the explosion. A citizen named Titik Riyanti suffered leg injuries from broken glass, along with minor scrapes on both legs and her right arm.
Also injured were Tri Waryati, a gas station employee, who had a cut on her head, and Faizal Arofat, who had minor scrapes on his left shoulder.
In addition to the injured victims, the explosion also resulted in material losses, as five houses had damaged glass windows. There were also broken glass windows at a hotel near the location. "Currently, the authorities and medical teams are conducting further handling and investigation related to the incident," Gandung concluded.
