Hippindo: Rupiah Weakens as Tourists Flock to Indonesia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Secretary General of the Indonesian Retail and Tenant Association (Hippindo), Haryanto Pratantara, said that there has recently been an influx of foreign tourists visiting Indonesia. This surge is driven by the affordability of travel, culinary experiences, and shopping for foreign tourists, made possible by the weakened rupiah.

“Unfortunately, this is due to the relatively weak Indonesian rupiah,” he said while opening the Indonesia Retail Summit and Expo (IRSE) event at Pantai Indah Kapuk, Jakarta, on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.

Haryanto sees the weakened rupiah as an issue also raised by retail business owners. On one hand, Indonesia can still compete with neighboring countries by offering a wide range of shopping items, tourist attractions, and culinary experiences.

On the other hand, Haryanto stated that despite the weakened rupiah, there are Indonesians who are willing to travel abroad and shop extravagantly. However, the global brands they are looking for are already doing business in Indonesia.

“Why do they shop overseas instead of in Indonesia? It's because of the availability of goods, prices, and variety,” he said.

Hippindo regularly hosts the Indonesia Retail Summit and Expo to attract global brands to collaborate and invest within the country. This year, there are 33 seminar sessions and discussions on retail competence, ranging from marketing and artificial intelligence to human resource development and store design.

The event, held at the Swissotel in Pantai Indah Kapuk, Jakarta, took place on August 26-27, 2026. 79 exhibition participants and sponsors were involved in this agenda, with a target of 4,000 visitors.

“We are working to enhance the capabilities of retailers in Indonesia to be competitive,” he added.

According to Haryanto, the exhibition featured many new technologies and offerings aimed at enhancing company productivity.
