Prabowo Says Indonesians Need Education on Forest Restoration

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto has called for public education on forest restoration to be expanded across Indonesia, saying efforts to protect water resources and the environment require sustained action.

Prabowo made the remarks during a coordination meeting on the response to the earthquake in Nagekeo Regency, Flores, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), at an evacuation center in Mbay on Wednesday, August 26.

He said the government should educate communities about the importance of protecting forests and restoring areas that have been degraded.

“Everyone must understand this. That is why we will educate people. BRIN and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology must educate not only people in NTT, but in every regency across Indonesia about protecting forests that have been degraded and reforesting them,” Prabowo said, according to the Presidential Secretariat’s YouTube livestream.

BRIN, or the National Research and Innovation Agency, and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology were among the institutions Prabowo mentioned as having a role in the education effort.

Prabowo said environmental protection and water management could not be addressed through short-term measures alone, but required medium- and long-term efforts.

He also called on TNI Commander General Agus Subiyanto, National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo and their respective units to contribute to the effort.

“The TNI commander, the police chief and all units must also play an important role,” he said.

Prabowo said restoring forests and maintaining water availability would be important for the future of regions across Indonesia. He also pointed to advances in science and technology as potential tools for addressing water-related challenges.

“We already have the technology. Advances in science and technology have made many technologies increasingly affordable,” he said.

The president did not provide details on the scope, timeline or specific programs that would be used to expand public education on forest restoration.
