How to Watch the Crescent Supermoon and Saturn This Week

2 hours ago 4

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Stargazers are about to be treated to one of the most rewarding celestial sights of 2026. The May crescent supermoon is fast approaching, set to create the darkest skies of May, perfect for skywatching. The event becomes even more special as Saturn will appear close to the delicate crescent moon.

With the event unfolding this week, now is the time to prepare for a night of skywatching. Here is what you need to know about the May crescent supermoon and its pairing with Saturn.

What Makes the May Crescent Supermoon Special?

Unlike a regular supermoon, which often draws attention for appearing larger and brighter, the May edition is special for the darkness it creates.

As The Economist noted, the spectacle occurs because the moon reaches its new moon phase while traveling relatively close to Earth in its orbit. During this alignment, the moon sits between Earth and the sun, leaving its illuminated side facing away from us. As a result, it becomes nearly invisible in the night sky.

With little to no moonlight, this week offers the darkest skies of the month, providing ideal conditions for spotting stars, constellations, and faint celestial objects.

When to See the May Crescent Supermoon and Saturn?

The best viewing window for the crescent supermoon stretches from May 11 to May 17. During May 12 and 13, a very thin waning crescent moon will begin appearing before sunrise, signaling the arrival of the month’s darkest skies.

The most notable pairing comes in the early hours of May 14, when the crescent moon will appear close to Saturn about 45 minutes before sunrise, low in the eastern sky. With only around 10% illumination, the moon will look like a delicate sliver beside the ringed planet.

By May 16, the moon reaches its new moon phase, temporarily vanishing from sight and bringing the darkest skies of May. This creates ideal conditions for stargazing, with Leo and Virgo constellations shining brighter as summer stars slowly emerge, according to Space.com and MSN.

Then, on May 17, the moon returns after sunset as an ultra-thin waxing crescent, just about 2% illuminated, appearing very low in the western sky.

Where to See the May Crescent Supermoon and Saturn?

The moon and Saturn will be visible in the eastern sky before sunrise. A clear, unobstructed horizon is key, with rural areas and dark-sky locations offering the best chance to catch the pairing.

To catch the event, People suggested stargazers set an early alarm and head outside before dawn. Allow your eyes to adjust to the darkness and choose a spot with minimal artificial light.

The ideal viewing time is roughly 45 minutes before sunrise, when the sky remains dark enough to reveal the crescent moon and nearby Saturn.

The pairing should be visible to the naked eye under clear conditions, though binoculars will make the thin crescent and Saturn easier to distinguish.
