Indonesia Falls to 122nd in Latest FIFA Rankings

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian national team has dropped three ranks in the latest FIFA list released on Friday, October 17, 2025. The Garuda squad now occupies the 122nd position in the world, down from the 119th rank, which was one of the best achievements in recent years.

This decline happened after poor results in the fourth round of the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. During that time, Indonesia suffered two defeats, 2-3 against Saudi Arabia and 0-1 against Iraq. These two negative results had a significant impact on Indonesia's FIFA points.

Despite showing high spirits, Joey Pelupessy and his teammates failed to match the experience and quality of opponents who were far above their ranking. The defeats not only thwarted Indonesia's journey to the final round and the fifth round, but also caused the national team's position to drop in the world ranking.

This situation is in stark contrast to Malaysia, which has actually risen five ranks to the 118th position in the world due to positive results in international matches. However, the Indonesian national team still has the opportunity to improve its standing through FIFA Matchday and several youth tournaments scheduled before the end of the year.

Indonesia's failure to qualify for the 2026 World Cup led PSSI (Indonesian Football Association) to dismiss Patrick Kluivert from the coaching position. PSSI stated that they and the coaching team had mutually agreed to terminate the cooperation earlier through a mutual termination mechanism.

PSSI and Kluivert ended their cooperation under the contract that was supposed to last until 2027. Consequently, the coaching team under Kluivert will no longer be responsible for the senior, U-23, and U-20 national teams.
