TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – The Indonesian National Narcotics Agency (BNN) is still investigating an international drug trafficking network suspected of involving Russian nationals arrested in Bangli, Bali, with approximately 7.8 kilograms of narcotics as evidence on Friday, June 5, 2026.
The Head of the BNN's Public Relations and Protocol Bureau, Commissioner General Putu Putera Sadana, when met in Denpasar, Bali, on Sunday, stated that the case was uncovered through collaboration between the BNN, the Directorate General of Customs and Excise, the Indonesian National Police, and the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections.
He stated that the arrest of the two foreign nationals is just the first step in uncovering a larger network.
Investigators are currently investigating the possible involvement of other perpetrators, including drug trafficking networks operating in Bali and internationally.
"This case is still under investigation and we are continuing to develop it. If other suspects or additional evidence are found, we will report further developments," said Putu Sadana.
The BNN has not yet revealed the detailed roles of each suspect or the operational pattern of the network suspected of involving the Russian national.
However, investigators are continuing to investigate the distribution channels, the origins of the narcotics, and the parties suspected of being involved in the network.
When asked about the possibility of other networks operating in Bali, Putu Putera Sadana stated that his team is still gathering evidence and statements to ensure that every finding can be legally accounted for.
"Hopefully, we can uncover it soon. We don't want to speculate because the entire process must be based on data, facts, and a scientific approach," he said.
He emphasized that the disclosure of this case demonstrates the state's commitment to combating illicit drug trafficking involving international networks. The entire investigation process is being conducted in accordance with Law Number 35 of 2009 concerning Narcotics.
Previously, a joint team from the National Narcotics Agency (BNN), the Ministry of Immigration and Corrections, Customs and Excise, and the Bali Regional Police successfully uncovered an international narcotics smuggling network involving a Russian national in Kayang Hamlet, Kayubihi Village, Bangli District, Bangli Regency, Bali, on Friday (June 5th), at approximately 8:00 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WITA).
In the operation, officers arrested two Russian nationals, identified as KK (52) and SK (40).
The operation stemmed from information from Soekarno-Hatta Customs and Excise regarding the discovery of a suitcase containing marijuana from Thailand, carried by a passenger identified as KK (52 years old), a Russian national, who was suspected of being transported to Bali.
After landing at Soekarno-Hatta Airport, KK continued his journey by rental car to Ketapang Port, crossing at 1:30 a.m. Western Indonesian Time (WITA).
Upon arrival at Gilimanuk Port at approximately 3:00 a.m. WITA, KK was picked up by SK, also a Russian national. After a chase with BNN officers from Gilimanuk to Bangli, the two suspects were arrested.
Officers also confiscated narcotics evidence in the form of hashish weighing 7.8 kilograms.
Hashish (often called hash) is a concentrated cannabis product made from the collected and compressed sap or resin of the cannabis plant (trichomes). This substance is typically brown in color, has a solid shape resembling a ball, stick, or block, and contains significantly higher levels of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) than regular cannabis flowers.
