TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Bosscha Observatory is preparing to observe a total lunar eclipse on Tuesday, March 3, 2026, from Lembang, West Bandung Regency, Indonesia. Yatny Yulianty, researcher and public activities coordinator at the Bosscha Observatory, said a total lunar eclipse is a truly beautiful natural phenomenon. "Especially because the public can observe it without using special equipment," she said on Sunday, March 1, 2026.
The observation process will also be broadcast live via the social media video accounts of Indonesia's oldest stargazing platform. Yatny said the total lunar eclipse is an ideal time to increase public astronomy literacy. "This phenomenon also provides a direct learning opportunity for the public to understand the real mechanisms of the Sun, Earth, and Moon system," she said.
The online observation activities allow people in areas unable to observe the eclipse to still watch and learn together. The Bosscha Observatory strives to provide astronomy learning opportunities that reach a wider audience, providing inclusive access to science. "The eclipse is a moment when science can be directly brought to the community," Yatny said.
He explained that some of the unique features of this phenomenon include the Moon turning a coppery red, often called a Blood Moon, when it is completely covered by Earth's shadow. Furthermore, the eclipse occurs during the month of Ramadan when Muslims are fasting. "This phenomenon can be a moment of reflection and contemplation on the order of the universe as part of the greatness of God Almighty," Yatny said.
For this observation, the Bosscha Observatory is focusing more on public education and documentation, without conducting specific research on total lunar eclipses. The team has prepared a telescope and digital camera system connected to a live broadcast device to display images of the Moon. During this broadcast, a team of astronomers will accompany the public through easy-to-understand, educational narratives. "This way, the public will not only witness the phenomenon but also understand the scientific processes that occur," Yatny said.
Observations at the Bosscha Observatory are not open to the public. According to Yatny, the public can conduct observations independently at home with family or close community members. Furthermore, the public can still follow the official live broadcast, which allows for broader and more interactive participation.
Of the seven phases of the total lunar eclipse, the Bosscha Observatory will likely only be able to observe the third phase, at 6:04 PM WIB (Western Indonesian Time). At that time, the Moon, which will rise in the east, will already be eclipsed. The peak of the total eclipse will be from 6:33 PM to 7:02 PM WIB. After that, the partial lunar eclipse ends at 8:17 PM, with the penumbral eclipse concluding at 9:23 PM WIB.
