TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Indonesian tennis player Janice Tjen advanced to the first round of Wimbledon after defeating 22nd seed Leylah Fernandez from Canada 6-1, 7-6 (3) at the All England Club in London on Monday.
Tjen secured her place in the second round after completing the match in 1 hour and 29 minutes. The victory was impressive considering Fernandez was one of the tournament's top seeds and a finalist at the 2021 US Open.
Tjen immediately took the initiative from the start of the match. She broke Fernandez's serve in the opening game and then won two more games to open a commanding 5-1 lead.
The 24-year-old Jakarta native didn't waste her momentum and broke Fernandez again in the seventh game to close out the first set with a convincing 6-1 victory.
The second set was a much tighter affair. Both players held their serve, keeping the score level at 6-6, forcing the match to a tiebreak.
Tjen displayed a more composed and effective performance in the tiebreak. She led from the start before closing out the match with a 7-3 victory to secure the second set and secure her place in the second round of Wimbledon.
Based on match statistics, Janice was more dominant, hitting six aces without a single double fault. She also hit 24 winners and only 10 unforced errors, while Fernandez posted five aces, three double faults, 20 winners, and 22 unforced errors.
Janice was also more effective in capitalizing on break point opportunities, converting three of her nine opportunities. Conversely, Fernandez failed to capitalize on her break points throughout the match.
This victory provides valuable capital for Janice as she continues her struggles in her Wimbledon debut. In the second round, Janice awaits the winner of the first-round match between home tennis player Mimi Xu and Australian tennis player Daria Kasatkina.
Janice Tjen will also compete in the doubles event alongside compatriot Aldila Sutjiadi. Janice/Aldila will face British doubles pair Harriet Dart/Maia Lumsden in the first round of Wimbledon on Thursday (2/7).
