Indonesia Targets End to Oil, LPG Imports in Three Years

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto emphasized that Indonesia must no longer import oil or LPG within three years to strengthen national energy independence, supported by a solar power plant (PLTS) program with a capacity of 100 gigawatt peak (GWp) launched in Jembrana Regency, Bali, on Tuesday.

"We must not import a single barrel of oil. We must not import any more. Insha Allah, we will not be able to import even a single LPG cylinder as soon as possible," Prabowo said in an official online broadcast by the Presidential Secretariat, as quoted by ANTARA.

Prabowo stated that this target must be supported by the construction of a 100 GW solar power plant, geothermal energy, gas field development, and increased national oil lifting.

According to Prabowo, the 100 GW solar power plant program is part of an effort to build an Indonesia that stands on its own two feet and does not depend on the development or conditions of other countries.

Regarding budget efficiency, Prabowo was reluctant to repeat the technical explanations previously presented by Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia to avoid making his speech too long.

The government is targeting the construction of the 100 GW solar power plant within three years. This new capacity is nearly equivalent to the current national electricity capacity of 88 GW from all energy sources.

"To give you an idea, Indonesia's total electricity supply currently amounts to 88 gigawatts, from coal, oil, gas, and geothermal sources. We will build 100 gigawatts, and we're serious about it. Our target is 100 gigawatts within three years," Prabowo said.

He said that renewable energy development must go hand in hand with increasing domestic capacity to meet oil and gas needs.

"With 100 gigawatts, with the geothermal that we have, with the gas fields that we have discovered, with oil lifting that must continue to increase, we cannot import a single barrel of oil again," said the President.

Energy independence is considered a crucial foundation for national sovereignty. Therefore, the Red and White Cabinet is asked to work hard, be bold, and be oriented toward tangible achievements in managing national resources for the welfare of the people.

Prabowo is also optimistic that the target of building the 100 GWp solar power plant can be completed in less than three years.
