TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The U-23 national team of Indonesia's match against Malaysia (Indonesia vs Malaysia) in the 2025 AFF U-23 Cup was attended by a larger number of spectators. Chants and cheers echoed throughout Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Monday night, July 21.
The fan flags of the La Grande Indonesia group in the northern stands have been waving since the start of the match. The same goes for the spectators in the South. The Ultras Garuda group with their flags never ceased to wave from their seats.
Chants exchanged between the spectators in the South and North stands could be heard. Meanwhile, fans sitting facing each other in the East and West sides often livened up the entire stadium with applause.
The third match of Group A in the 2025 AFF U-23 Cup seemed livelier than the previous two matches when Indonesia played against Brunei Darussalam and Malaysia. The stadium seats were filled. The entire stadium appeared to be painted in red, although there were still empty seats in the upper sections of the stadium.
A total of 27,013 spectators were recorded to have witnessed the crucial match in the 2025 AFF U-23 Cup at Gelora Bung Karno. This number was higher than the attendance for the match between Garuda Muda and the Philippines on July 18, which was 8,409. Meanwhile, when played against Brunei Darussalam, there were only 2,743 spectators.
Rahmat Dwi Hidayat, the Chairman of La Grande Indonesia in the Special Region of Yogyakarta, stated that La Grande organization itself brought around 500 spectators. 'From Yogyakarta, 30 of us came by bus,' said the Garuda squad fan.
Meanwhile, Eka Safitri, an Indonesian supporter, considered the Indonesia and Malaysia match to be a big one in the 2025 AFF U-23 Cup. 'Since the beginning, Indonesia's rival has always been Malaysia,' said Eka, who came from Cikarang riding a motorcycle with her husband, Sohadi.
A similar sentiment was expressed by an Indonesian supporter, Jaya. He watched the Garuda Muda match against Malaysia because he believed that the rivalry between the two teams was very strong. 'Against Malaysia, it's more about pride,' said Abe at the Main Gelora Bung Karno Stadium, Senayan, Jakarta, on Monday night, July 21, 2025.
The decisive match between the U-23 national teams of Indonesia and Malaysia ended in a draw. This result led Indonesia to qualify for the semifinals as the group champion, while Malaysia was eliminated.
