TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has explained the reason behind President Prabowo Subianto’s microphone suddenly cutting off during his speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).
According to the ministry, the incident was purely procedural, linked to the strict five-minute speaking limit.
Prabowo was addressing the high-level meeting on the Palestine issue and the two-state solution at the UN Headquarters in New York on Monday, September 22, 2025, when his microphone went silent immediately after he declared, “We are ready to provide peacekeeping forces.”
“There is a procedural rule that each country is given five minutes. If the speech exceeds five minutes, the microphone is turned off,” said Hartyo Harkomoyo, Director of Information and Media at The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in a press briefing on Tuesday, September 23.
Hartyo explained that every UN meeting has its own technical rules, including strict time allocations for each delegation to ensure all voices are heard. In Prabowo’s case, once he exceeded the time limit, his voice was cut from the live broadcast being monitored globally.
However, Hartyo emphasized that the president’s remarks were still delivered effectively. “Despite the microphone being turned off, President Prabowo’s speech remained clearly audible to delegates inside the General Assembly Hall,” he said.
Prabowo was not the only leader affected by the time restriction. Earlier in the session, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan also experienced a microphone cutoff while delivering his speech.
Turkey’s Directorate of Communications confirmed the same reason: the UN’s automatic system disables microphones once the allotted time expires. Anadolu news agency reported that Erdogan exceeded his time partly because he paused several times to acknowledge applause from the audience.
The high-level meeting on Palestine, co-chaired by France and Saudi Arabia, gathered 33 leaders and representatives from various countries and organizations, including the European Union and the Arab League. The forum aimed to build momentum toward resolving the Palestinian issue and advancing the two-state solution.
