
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian National Police Headquarters reported that they have arrested over 10,000 suspected thugs in a simultaneous operation since the beginning of this month.
"It reached 10,353," said the head of the public information bureau of the Police Public Relations Division, Brigadier General Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko, in his written statement as quoted by Tempo on Wednesday, May 28, 2025.
The police arrested the thugs on suspicion of illegal levies, threats, extortion, and assault.
The Jakarta Metro Police arrested 3,599 suspected thugs under its jurisdiction, with 348 named as suspects. Meanwhile, 3,251 others received education from the police.
Meanwhile, from May 1 to 14, East Java Police discovered 1,862 cases of thuggery and designated 2,307 suspects. "This operation addresses security disturbances related to thuggery," said the Director of the General Crimes Unit, Police Commissioner General Farman, in his written statement on Friday, May 16, 2025.
In West Java, specifically in the city of Bandung, 131 suspected thugs were arrested during the past week. Bandung City Police Chief Commissioner Budi Sartono stated that the suspects were arrested for extortion. "Some of them were carrying sharp weapons," he said at the Bandung City Police station on Monday, May 20, 2025.
The Indonesian police are carrying out simultaneous arrests across the country to combat thuggery practices.
National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo asked citizens of Indonesia to actively report thuggery practices around them. "We will instruct our members to take strict action," he said when met at Plaza Senayan, Central Jakarta, on Friday, May 9, 2025.
