Iran Envoy Welcomes Prabowo's Mediation Offer but Questions Its Impact

7 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Ambassador of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Indonesia, Mohammad Boroujerdi, responded on Monday, March 2, 2026, to Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto’s offer to mediate the escalating conflict between Iran, the United States (US), and Israel.

While welcoming the initiative, Boroujerdi emphasized that no further communication or concrete steps have been taken by Indonesia regarding the mediation.

“We appreciate the goodwill expressed by the government of the Republic of Indonesia, but until now, there have been no steps taken in relation to this matter,” Boroujerdi said during a press conference at his official residence in Menteng, Central Jakarta.

He added that Iran has yet to assess whether Indonesia’s mediation could influence the unfolding conflict. “We still don't know whether such a step can have an impact or influence or not,” he said.

Boroujerdi stressed that Iran is open to communication with Indonesia on the post-attack situation following the US and Israeli strikes in Tehran. However, he was cautious about the likelihood of successful mediation.

“Whether in this situation, mediation can yield results or not, I cannot answer that. But communication and interaction among senior government officials of both countries are certainly possible and can be done,” he said.

Iran’s Stance on Negotiations

During the press conference, Boroujerdi reiterated Iran’s position regarding potential talks with the United States. “We believe that currently, no negotiations and discussions with the American government will be useful, because they are not bound and do not adhere to any outcomes,” he stated.

He also called on Islamic countries that view the US-Israeli strikes as illegal to declare their support for Iran.

“This support can be expressed through official condemnations or via international forums such as the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and the United Nations (UN),” he said.

Boroujerdi further urged countries to advocate for global peace: “Third, to carry out the 'Say No to War' campaign and reject war worldwide, as well as to show their opposition to all types of warfare.”

Earlier on Monday, Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, denied reports that Tehran was seeking to resume negotiations with Washington.

Through platform X, Larijani stressed that Iran would not engage in talks with the US, responding to media claims of a potential new initiative. “We will not negotiate with the US,” he said, as reported by Antara.

Prabowo’s Mediation Offer

Indonesia has positioned itself as a potential facilitator for dialogue. On February 28, 2026, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that President Prabowo is willing to travel to Tehran to mediate if both parties agree.

“If agreed upon by both parties, the President of Indonesia is willing to travel to Tehran to mediate,” the statement read. The Indonesian government also expressed regret over the resumption of armed conflict and urged all parties to prioritize dialogue while respecting each country’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
