Iran, US Clash Over Reports of New Doha Peace Talks

4 hours ago 3

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta The United States (US) and Iran gave conflicting reports on Monday, June 29, over whether fresh negotiations would take place in Doha, Qatar, as efforts continue to preserve a fragile ceasefire reached earlier this month.

US President Donald Trump said Iran had requested a meeting with Washington, adding that talks would take place on Tuesday in the Qatari capital.

"Iran has requested a meeting. The meeting will take place tomorrow in Doha," Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform.

However, Iranian officials quickly rejected the claim, insisting that no technical negotiations had been scheduled this week.

As reported by DW, a US official said Washington and Tehran had agreed to pause military attacks and allow shipping to continue through the Strait of Hormuz while efforts to formalize a broader agreement continue. The official said technical discussions were expected to resume as part of negotiations aimed at securing a lasting settlement.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi, however, denied reports that technical talks between the two countries would take place in Doha.

"There are no technical working group meetings scheduled for this week. However, consultations with Qatar—including regarding the fulfillment of the other party's obligations under the memorandum—are continuing," Gharibabadi said, according to Iran's Tasnim news agency, as cited by Antara.

He added that reports suggesting technical negotiations would begin this week remained unconfirmed, although consultations through intermediaries were continuing and both sides would hold technical meetings once they agreed on a suitable time and venue.

Speaking later at the White House, Trump appeared less certain about the significance of any potential meeting.

"The meeting is perhaps important, perhaps not," he told reporters in the Oval Office.

The latest exchange comes less than two weeks after Iran and the United States signed a memorandum of understanding on June 18 aimed at ending military hostilities that had escalated since late February.

According to the memorandum, the United States agreed to lift its naval blockade of Iranian ports, while Iran committed to restoring normal shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most important oil transit routes.

The agreement also includes Iran's commitment not to develop nuclear weapons, with negotiations on Tehran's nuclear program expected to continue under a separate agreement within 60 days.

According to Iranian officials, Tehran's primary objective in the upcoming negotiations remains the lifting of international sanctions imposed on the country.

Despite the memorandum, uncertainty continues to surround the diplomatic process after military exchanges over the weekend threatened to derail the fragile ceasefire, while both governments continue to issue contradictory statements about the next phase of negotiations.
