Is There Another Heatwave Coming to London? 6-Day Hot Spell on the Way

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - London is bracing for another heatwave later this month, with temperatures forecast to reach 28C or higher for six consecutive days from July 29 to August 3, according to weather forecasts.

The UK capital briefly escaped a prolonged hot spell after temperatures fell to around 24C over the weekend following nearly two weeks of highs above 28C. However, temperatures are expected to rise again this week, with another period of intense heat forecast toward the end of July.

BBC Weather forecasts show temperatures climbing to 26C on Wednesday, July 22, before reaching 27C on Thursday and 29C on Friday. Temperatures are expected to ease slightly before another heatwave arrives.

Here is London's upcoming six-day heatwave forecast, as reported by MyLondon:

• Wednesday, July 29: 28C, sunny intervals with a gentle breeze

• Thursday, July 30: 29C, sunny with a gentle breeze

• Friday, July 31: 28C, sunny with possible light rain showers

• Saturday, August 1: 28C, sunny with a gentle breeze

• Sunday, August 2: 28C, drizzle possible with a gentle breeze

• Monday, August 3: 29C, light cloud with a breeze

Under London's heatwave criteria, temperatures must reach at least 28C for three consecutive days to qualify as a heatwave. The upcoming forecast is expected to mark the city's fourth heatwave of the year.

Longest Dry Spell in Years

The renewed heat comes amid an extended dry period in London. The capital is not expected to receive significant rainfall until the end of July, potentially resulting in a 32-day dry spell since the last substantial rainfall on June 27.

The period could become London's longest stretch without rain since 2018, according to weather records. The southeast of England has also experienced its longest uninterrupted dry period in 30 years, according to the UK Met Office.

The prolonged lack of rainfall has contributed to drought conditions across parts of the UK, with millions of residents affected by hosepipe restrictions.

Wildfire Risks Rise as Temperatures Increase

The hot and dry conditions have raised concerns over wildfire risks, with London's parks and green spaces becoming increasingly vulnerable to fires.

According to Standard, he London Fire Brigade has warned residents to take extra precautions as vegetation becomes more flammable during prolonged periods of heat and drought.

Previous heatwaves have also affected transport services, with high temperatures causing disruptions across parts of the rail network.

The latest forecast is not expected to bring the extreme heat seen during previous heatwaves, when London experienced temperatures in the high 30s and issued severe weather warnings.

The Met Office said warmer and drier conditions could return toward the beginning of August as high pressure potentially moves over southern England, bringing above-average temperatures, particularly in the south.
