TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Israel is expected to propose a new troop withdrawal plan during ceasefire negotiations in Doha, Qatar. The talks had hit a deadlock as Israel insisted on maintaining control over a large portion of the Gaza Strip.
Reported by Anadolu, Channel 12 Israel stated that the mediators are still waiting for the new plan to be submitted. The plan is hoped to bridge the gap between Israel and Hamas, which have yet to find common ground.
Hamas had previously agreed to a buffer zone of 700 meters to one kilometer. However, Israel proposed a control zone of three kilometers, causing the ceasefire talks to stall.
Tension in Netanyahu's Cabinet
Sources from the Times of Israel mentioned that Israel's latest plan still includes control over one-third of the Gaza Strip, including a three-kilometer buffer zone in Rafah. The area is planned to become a city fully controlled by Israel, where Gaza residents will be inspected and restricted in their mobility.
The United States is also reportedly unsatisfied with Israel's previous plan and has expressed concerns to the mediators from Qatar and Egypt. Despite Israel being said to have softened some demands regarding troop repositioning during the 60-day ceasefire, the new plan still does not satisfy Hamas.
A source mentioned that the mediators are still trying to balance Hamas' rejection of the old plan with pressure from Israel's right-wing faction, which refuses to compromise more realistically.
Meanwhile, the National Security Minister from the right-wing party, Itamar Ben-Gvir, is said to resign if a ceasefire agreement is signed. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is reportedly set to meet Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich to ease potential divisions in his cabinet.
Hamas Rejects Qatar's Proposal
According to The Jerusalem Post, negotiations on hostage release are still ongoing, including during the Sabbath, involving mediators from Egypt and Qatar. A senior official from the Israeli Prime Minister's Office stated that Hamas had rejected a proposal from Qatar previously approved by Israel.
"Hamas rejected the Qatari proposal, is creating obstacles, refuses to compromise, and accompanies the talks with psychological warfare aimed at sabotaging the negotiations," the official said.
