TEMPO.CO, Jakarta Italy’s Health Ministry predicts that 23 of the country's 27 major cities will be on full alert to prepare for the highest level of danger due to a heat wave on Sunday, July 2.

As reported by ANTARA, as the fourth heat wave of the year intensifies, air temperatures are expected to continue rising.

A total of 11 cities have been declared on full alert status on Friday, July 31, namely Bolzano, Campobasso, Civitavecchia, Firenze, Frosinone, Latina, Perugia, Rieti, Rome, Turin, and Viterbo. Today, that number has increased to 19 cities with the addition of Bologna, Brescia, Cagliari, Milan, Naples, Pescara, Venice and Verona to the list.

Meanwhile, Catania, Genoa, Palermo, and Trieste are projected to face the same alert status on Sunday.

The full alert status or “Alert Level 3” indicates a prolonged heat wave emergency with high health risks, even for young people in good health.

Several deaths are suspected to have been caused by this year's heat wave. In addition to wildfires and drought, this extreme weather has also caused major problems for businesses, particularly in the agricultural sector. This hot summer has even forced farmers to speed up the grape harvest in the Piedmont region.

Meanwhile, wildfires have flared up again in the Gargano region of Puglia, where a large blaze near the coastal town of Peschici forced the Coast Guard to evacuate hundreds of people by sea over the weekend.

Scientists say the climate crisis caused by greenhouse gas emissions from human activities will trigger various extreme weather events, such as heat waves, droughts, powerful storms and floods, to occur more frequently and increase in intensity.

While there are many sources of greenhouse gases that fuel global warming, the primary driving factor is the use of fossil fuels such as oil, gas, and coal, the sale of which continues to generate huge profits for the world's giant energy companies.
