Jakarta Mandates Weekly Exercise for Civil Servants Due to High Obesity Rate

5 hours ago 1

TEMPO.COJakarta - Jakarta Deputy Governor Rano Karno has mandated that all civil servants (ASN) exercise every Friday. This new policy, outlined in a gubernatorial instruction (Ingub), aims to prevent health problems among government employees.

"The Ingub is in place; the governor's instruction states that on Fridays, we must exercise together here. It's something we must do," Rano explained at Jakarta City Hall today, Friday, July 18, 2025.

According to him, maintaining the health of civil servants is crucial for effective public service. "Because it's impossible for us to improve work ethics if health is compromised," stated the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDIP) politician.

In addition to the mandatory Friday exercise, Rano revealed that he and Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung have introduced other policies to promote the well-being of civil servants. This includes a requirement to use public transportation every Wednesday.

Rano noted that this public transport policy indirectly encourages civil servants to walk more. The former governor of Banten shared his own positive experience, saying, "I feel that Wednesdays are beneficial for me. Aside from using public transportation, I have to move; I walk."

On a separate occasion, Dr. Ani Ruspitawati, Head of the Jakarta Health Office, shed light on the health status of the capital's civil servants. Health examinations conducted in 2024 revealed that 62 percent of civil servants are obese.

Furthermore, Dr. Ani highlighted several other prevalent health issues: "15.4 percent are overweight, 27.6 percent have hypertension, 5.7 percent suffer from diabetes mellitus, 24 percent lack physical fitness, and 15 percent experience mental health problems."

Before the mandatory Friday exercise, Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung had already implemented the policy requiring civil servants to use public transportation every Wednesday. This initiative has been in effect since April 2025, with both Governor Pramono and Vice Governor Rano Karno adhering to the requirement.
