Jakarta Police Extend Detention of Delpedro Marhaen and Fellow Activists

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta -The Jakarta Metropolitan Police (Polda Metro Jaya) have extended the detention of activist Delpedro Marhaen and several other suspects in an alleged incitement case connected to recent demonstrations. The extension was made after their initial 20-day detention period expired.

Fadhil Alfathan, a member of the Advocacy Team for Democracy (TAUD) representing the detainees, said all of his clients had submitted requests for a suspension of detention, but none had received a response.

“Currently, their detention has been extended by the police,” Fadhil told reporters at Polda Metro Jaya headquarters on Monday night, September 22, 2025.

He explained that the legal team had not been informed of the police’s reasoning behind the decision.

“We don’t know the specific grounds used by the police,” he said.

According to Indonesia’s Code of Criminal Procedure (KUHAP), suspects may be detained for up to 20 days during the investigation stage, with the option for prosecutors to extend custody for an additional 40 days.

Tempo sought confirmation from Polda Metro Jaya officials, including Commissioner Ronald Simanjuntak, Head of the Subdirectorate of Public Information, and Gilang Prasatya, Head of the State Security Unit II. Both had not responded at the time of publication.

Delpedro and five others were arrested in early September on charges of provoking unrest during the demonstrations on August 25 and 28, 2025. Police accused them of inciting protesters to commit violent acts. Since then, dozens more have been detained over alleged crimes related to the protests.

Those currently held include Gejayan Memanggil activist Delpedro Marhaen, fellow activist Syahdan Husein, Riau University student Khariq Anhar, Lokataru Foundation staffer Muzaffar Salim, Bung Karno University alumnus Figha Lesmana, and an individual identified by the initials R.A.P.

Among the evidence cited by police is a post from the Instagram account @lokataru_foundation, which promoted a complaint center for students participating in the August 28 demonstration.

The post urged students facing sanctions to resist collectively, carried the hashtag #dontbeafraid, and included a hotline number for reports.

The six suspects face multiple charges, including Article 160 of the Indonesian Criminal Code (KUHP), Article 45A paragraph 3 in conjunction with Article 28 paragraph 3 of the Electronic Information and Transactions Law (Law No. 1/2024), and Article 76H in conjunction with Articles 15 and 87 of the Child Protection Law (Law No. 35/2014).
