Jakarta Warns Residents of Blazes During Long Dry Season

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo warned residents of fire outbreaks during the long dry season ahead. One of the measures to avoid a blaze, he said, is by avoiding littering.

"We strongly urge residents to participate in the joint security efforts, especially in sensitive, densely populated areas like Tambora, Cakung, and so on. For example, don't throw cigarette butts carelessly after smoking, as this could trigger a fire," Pramono said in South Jakarta on Tuesday, July 21, 2026.

According to forecasts from the country's Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), Jakarta is expecting a long dry season this year.

Therefore, the residents are strongly advised to ramp up their vigilance about fires during this season, as there is greater potential for blazes.

"Therefore, through the Jakarta Provincial Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), we have also conducted outreach, including urging each neighborhood unit (RW) to acquire one fire extinguisher," Pramono explained.

Previously, Pramono signed a Gubernatorial Regulation (Pergub) requiring each neighborhood unit (RT) to have one portable fire extinguisher (APAR) to anticipate fires in the Jakarta region.

The one APAR in each neighborhood program is deemed capable to expedite initial response before firefighters arrive on the scene.
