Japan Warns Nationals Against Committing Child Sexual Abuse in Indonesia

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Japanese Embassy in Jakarta warned on Wednesday, May 13, Japanese nationals residing in or traveling to Indonesia against engaging in child sexual exploitation. Perpetrators, the embassy said, will face prosecution in both Japan and Indonesia.

The stern warning came after local news reports of Japanese-language social media posts suggesting that individuals from Japan had sexually abused children in Jakarta and other regions across the Southeast Asian country.

In a warning on its website, the embassy said that local authorities could investigate anyone suspected of violating child protection laws or committing rape, noting that sexual intercourse with a minor is punishable as rape despite "expressed consent."

Japanese citizens who exploit minors in Indonesia will also face prosecution in Japan for violating domestic laws to protect children, it added in a statement quoted from Antara, citing reports from Kyodo.

Indonesians have take notes of social media posts on X written in Japanese seemingly boasting about episodes of sexual exploitation of minors in Jakarta and the surrounding areas, despite knowing they were under 18.

On Wednesday, May 13, Jakarta police said their cybercrime unit was investigating a case in the southern part of Jakarta that had been mentioned in a social media post.

The Japanese Embassy in Laos also posted a similar warning on its website last year for its citizens visiting the Southeast Asian country.
