KPU Walks Back Confidentiality on Presidential Candidate Documents After Public Outcry

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The Indonesian General Elections Commission (KPU) has revoked the regulation restricting public access to documents related to presidential and vice presidential candidacy requirements. The regulation was previously outlined in KPU Regulation Number 731 of 2025 dated August 21, 2025.

KPU Chair Mochammad Afifuddin said the commission has annulled the rule after widespread public criticism. "We, as an institution, finally decided to rescind the regulation," Afifuddin said in a press conference at the KPU building in Central Jakarta on Tuesday, September 16, 2025.

Afifuddin appreciated the public's criticism and input regarding the KPU regulation. According to him, the commission committed to conducting general elections in accordance with the principles of openness to public information while considering personal data protection. 

After repealing the regulation restricting access to presidential and vice-presidential candidate documents, the KPU will utilize existing regulations in managing public information, including Law Number 14 of 2008 concerning Public Information Openness and Law Number 27 of 2022 concerning Personal Data Protection.

Additionally, Afifuddin mentioned that KPU will work with authorities to provide solutions for personal data protection within the context of general elections.

On the same occasion, KPU Commissioner August Mellaz said the commission appreciates the citizens' responses, concerns, and criticisms. "But indeed, post-election, there are different considerations that became the bases (of the decision)," he said.

KPU restricted public access to the presidential and vice-presidential candidates' data through KPU Decree Number 731 of 2025 concerning the Restriction of Presidential and Vice-Presidential Candidate Document Requirements, issued on August 21, 2025.

The regulation includes 16 document requirements for presidential and vice-presidential candidates that are exempt from public access, including health certificates, proof of wealth receipts, and personal statement documents.
